On January 8th, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) was hosting “Congress on Your Corner,” which was brought to an abrupt halt when a gunman opened fire on the crowed. Once the smoke cleared, Rep. Giffords was left critically injured, nine people were killed (including a 9-year-old girl) and 13 others were injured.
The gunman, Jared Loughner, took an extreme approach at drawing attention towards his mental instabilities. This horrific act sent shock waves across the Nation. It seemed to push the country into a state of fear. But, some feel that hate filled rhetoric caused for things to bowl over in Loughner’s mind. Americans are also questioning how Loughner slipped through the cracks and didn’t receive any mental health treatment.
Friday night, Rep. Keith Ellison (MN-D) held “Congress on Your Corner,” in honor of Rep. Giffords speedy recovery. Rep. Giffords is making progress and showing improvement(s). The injured and killed aren’t the only ones that were left wounded. The nation has been left with wounds as well.
Rep. Ellison presented a simple concept, a concept that he has based his entire political career around. It’s one word, unity. “In tragedy, we stand together…We must stand together…” said Rep. Ellison. Leaders from the Jewish, African, Hindu, Native American, Ogadn American and African American communities displayed a united front. Rep. Ellison also has the support of the president.
Rep. Ellison wanted to address issues and concerns with his constituents on a personal level. He also wanted the audience to know that they should not live in fear but in loving harmony. Rep. Ellison believes that the nation can achieve unity by re-affirming connections with democracy, prayer, personal sacrifice, and civility.
